The 9th Annual Czech Spring Film Series presents Czech Comedy in the 20th Century

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce its lineup for the Spring Semester for its renowned Czech Film Series. Each film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursday in GRG 102 (The Geography Building). Films are in Czech with English subtitles. As always, the films will be free and open to the public.

Jan. 26: Duchácek arranges it (Duchácek to zarídí).1938. The premier actor of the interwar period, Vlasta Burian, stars in this funny tale of an overwhelmed accountant.

Feb. 2: The Good Soldier Švejk. 1957. This Czech classic is the tale of a bumbling soldier in the inane world of World War One.

Feb. 9: The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (Vynález zkázy, literally "A Deadly Invention"). 1958. One of the greatest stop-motion animation movies of all time, it is Karel Zeman’s masterpiece.

Feb. 16: Lemonade Joe. 1964. A beloved and funny spaghetti western.

Feb. 23: Capricious Summer (Rozmarné leto). 1967. Jirí Menzel’s take on a sleepy Bohemian village‘s band of eccentrics.

March 1: The Fireman’s Ball (Horí, má panenko). 1967. Another gem from the Czech New Wave, Milos Forman’s satire was “banned forever“ by the authorities after its release.

March 8: I Killed Einstein, Gentlemen...(Zabil jsem Einsteina, pánové...). 1969. In Oldrich Lipský’s sci-fi film, atomic war has caused women to grow beards and stop having children.

March 29: Run, Waiter, Run! (Vrchní Prchní!) 1981. A hilarious tale of a philandering bookstore owner’s wild attempt to get rich.

April 5: Dissolved and Effused (Rozpuštený a vypuštený). 1984. Ladislav Smoljak’s Cimrmanesque tale that will make you say “duck” way too often.

April 19: The Elementary School (Obecna škola). 1991. Jan Sverák’s ode to his childhood is funny, touching, and poignant.

April 26: Pupendo. 2003. A tragicomic tale about an artist’s struggle to maintain integrity in the greyness of 1980s communist Czechoslovakia.
